pole2pole Nordic Walking Q. So what is Nordic Walking? A. Nordic Walking is an all over bodywork out – a bit like cross-country skiing without the skis or power walking without the weights. It provides holistic fitness training not only for your legs but also for your upper limbs and torso. It’s just an extention of something we can all do! Q. How long have I been involved with Nordic Walking? A. I qualified as an Instructor in 2008. Currently, we have 6 90 minute walks per week in Parks and open spaces locally. Q. What particular benefits does Nordic Walking offer compared with other forms of exercise such as hill walking or running? A. You can gain the cardio-vascular benefits of running with much lower impact on your knee and hip joints. There’s a 20-40% higher cardio-vascular work-rate than that achieved with normal walking so you burn more calories. With a greater degree of body rotation, there are also benefits for walkers who suffer with lower back pain. The pole-swing movements in Nordic Walking exercise the shoulder muscles. This releases tension we sometimes all feel in our shoulders and neck. As you take some of the pressure through your arms, Nordic Walking is also load bearing for the upper spine. This provides benefits to minimise the risk of osteoporosis for us women. By pushing back on the poles and opening up the chest, there can also be improvements in respiration. You’re simply breathing more deeply - in the open air rather than in a stuffy gymQ. How do people get started? A. The best way to get started is to join us for a pole2pole Nordic walking class or contact me, Kay Speakman, for a 1-2-1 technique session. I use Leki Nordic walking poles and also sell them if you want your own.
