Luminar Q The process is quite simple: the laser energy breaks up the ink into tiny particles. These particles are taken up by the ‘scavenger’ cells in the skin, and are carried away from the tattoo, resulting in a gradual disappearance of the tattoo. Like most laser treatments, this is also attracted to the coloured pigments in the tattoo. The energy breaks the ink into smaller and smaller particles, which are disposed of by the body’s ‘scavenger’ cells called macrophages. This will result in a gradual fading of the tattoo. How quickly the tattoo will remove depends on: Colours: dark colours will remove the quickest as the pigment absorbs more of the laser. Black and dark-blues will remove the quickest. Light colours like yellows and greens don’t absorb laser light as well so will require MORE treatment. Depth of the tattoo ink: amateur tattoos will remove quicker than professional tattoos, as the ink hasn’t penetrated the skin as deep as a professional tattoo. How will I feel during laser tattoo removal? Apart from a mild pricking sensation, most people do not experience any high level of discomfort during the procedure. Local anaesthetic cream can be used and/or pain relief, such as paracetamol, can be taken to ease discomfort if needed. Is laser tattoo removal the right treatment for me? Laser tattoo removal may not be suitable if you are a darker skin type; this is due to the potential of the area leaving a ‘ghosting’ effect. This is where the skin is lighter than the surrounding area. Your practitioner will assess suitability in your consultation. How often will I need laser tattoo removal? You will need treatment minimum every four weeks and a course of 6-10 treatments is often enough to remove the tattoo depending on the colour and depth of the tattoo ink. What happens after laser tattoo removal? Redness of the skin, or erythema, in the area is completely normal and subsides within a short time. It is very important to keep your skin away from the sun by using a physical sun block of at least Factor 30 to protect it from damage while it is sensitive.
