Scope In-service electrical equipment includes fixed equipment as well as portable appliances. All portable and fixed electrical equipments should be inspected and tested at intervals. These include equipments such as electric kettles which are portable, and wall-mounted hand driers which are fixed equipment. There are several defined equipment categories but their inspection and testing is often collectively referred to as Portable Appliance Testing or PAT Requirement for Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Ever since the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 came into force in 1990 and the Health & Safety at Work Act in 1974, every business has to be electrically safe for use by their staff, customers and the public. Electrical equipment should be maintained and checked regularly to ensure it is safe and in good repair. In particular, managers (and others, such as landlords) responsible for electrical equipment maintenance should ensure: • Equipment is maintained in a safe condition • Information is available to equipment users to ensure safety • Safe procedures for inspection and testing are used • Records of inspection and testing are maintained Electrical-tests is able to undertake inspection and testing of all types of in-service equipments.
