tombiddulph woodturning
Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
I have been woodturning for quite a long time now . . . . after a few years in the construction industry and three years at art college, I began production of bespoke carved and turned oak and other fine furniture, some of which was exhibited in England and Wales, and some was made for listed and historic buildings. It was during this time that I also started to explore creative woodturning. After relocation, I spent several years in craft education, including part-time lecturing in Carpentry & Joinery up to CGLI Advanced Craft level, and more recently, as part of my work as a community pastor, in teaching and giving experience of woodturning to individuals and groups of adults, as well to youth and children in schools and at community events. My sculptural pieces and other turned objects are almost entirely made from local timber : trees which have fallen or have been felled by tree surgeons. The timbers I use include ash, beech, sycamore, cherry, locust and yew. The only ‘exotic’ timbers I use have been reclaimed or donated. Art, craft and nature come together in these turned and carved objects which are designed to be tactile as well as visual. Every piece of timber tells a story, whether it’s a just humble pine board or a piece of yew which was growing before the Norman conquest, a thousand years ago, or more. All timber carries a historical record of passing years, seasons, climatic changes, even fungal attack in its growth rings, grain pattern and colour. Every piece is amazing in itself, some pieces are just stunning, and that’s before we start cutting it and shaping it . . . .
